The Many Benefits of Water

Have just finished a book titled “Your Body’s Many Cries For Water” by Dr. Batmanghelidj (Don’t ask me to pronounce it)

Was a very interesting book and gives really good info on the MANY benefits of Water and why we need to be taking it for more reasons than to just rehydrate.

In no particular order I will just put in bullet form some of the points he made in the book:

+ Dr.Allen Roses – Vice President of Glaxo- SmithKline Pharmaceutical company said this regarding Medications “The vast majority of Drug’s – more than 90% – only work in 30- 50% of the people”. This is a recurring theme in a lot of these book’s/ courses!

From these studies it seems you are MUCH better off getting to the source of any problems and simply beat them with a sensible diet before problems escalate.

+ A Dry Mouth is the very last sign of dehydration. So don’t just rely on it.

+ Your digestive System need’s water to break down and digest food’s

+ Brain Cell dehydration has been linked to Alzheimer’s disease and prolonged dehydration has been linked to brain cell’s shrinking!

+ When constantly tilting your head forward (as we all do when sitting) water slips out of the discs in the neck. So try bringing it back up or if you have real neck trouble lie on the bed with your head over the side of it tilting back.

+ Your Vascular system also need’s water as the blood vessel’s can close up to compensate for Water Loss and cause a rise in tension that we know as Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)

+ Only Water will do for this, nothing else!! There is debate on this but I don’t see how a Soda full of pure rubbish can be good for the body in any way what so ever?

He talked about sweeteners and the damage they cause. The most talked about sweetener is Aspartame which has been linked to Brain Tumors in Rats as well as Bladder, Breast and Prostate cancer in humans. This is in so many things and most try to be avoided as much as possible.

+ Children in particular are most vulnerable to the addictive properties of caffeine containing properties. This is why it is so important to take some sort of stand to at least cut down on the amount of rubbish your child is taking.

+ Water is actually lost through evaporation in the lungs, ultimately leading to less water during the act of breathing. It’s needed in the lungs to keep the air passages moist and prevent them from drying up when air goes in and comes out.

This was a particular interesting chapter as my Mother has had bad Asthma and serious coughing for a long time. It comes and goes and she is waiting word on an operation in the next month or 2.

So having read that chapter in bed 1 morning I got up to give her a good lecture, My family loves these first thing in the morning ; )

Her Water intake has improved up to taking an extra 2 pints of water a day. Her coughing has eased off big time but as I said it comes and goes so we will see if it stay’s off in the next couple of weeks/ months but it will be very interesting to see.

He also has a chapter totally on Salt and suggest’s everyone should take 3gram’s of Salt (half a teasppon) for every 10 glasses of Water.

Especially should be taken if you have Asthma as the Salt can help to break up the Mucus in the lungs.

+ Dehydration causes a severe depletion of an amino acid called Tryptophan. A lack of this has also been linked to depression and mental disorder’s.

+ He is dead against Caffeine. There is a lot of debate out there about it for both sides. Caffeine has been shown to lead to energy depletion of the brain and if taken repeatedly can exhaust the brain.

It is also a diuretic that leads to more water out of the body than is contained in the drink.

I have heard guys saying that “Coffee is a diuretic so there for it’s good for weight/ fat loss”. Maybe I’m missing something but is that not like saying have a load of Fibre or a laxative and sit on the toilet for half an hour???

The more I read up on it and hear member’s talking about it I just don’t get it. It’s very addictive and people can’t admit there hooked on it.

There is nothing wrong with it in small doses but people take far more than they need.

In my opinion if you can’t go 7 days with out Caffeine you have an unhealthy relationship with it, maybe addiction might be too strong a word but definitely an unhealthy relationship.

Like everything, you should try and do some trial and error to see what work’s for you and what doesn’t.

When I hear something in health/ fitness I always like to look at it logically to see if it makes sense. If it sounds stupid/ to good to be true then it probably is but if it makes logical sense then there may be something to it.

All these points with Water make absolute logical sense in my opinion. If all these parts of the body need water to function and your not giving it water then obviously there is going to be a break down somewhere along the line!!

So try it out for 10- 14 days and see how you get on.

Just on a little side note.

The last book I read was one of Duncan Bannatyne’s (the Scottish dude off Dragon’s Den). Anyway he goes to Romania and has helped out with loads of charity work.

He was saying about how one of the girls in the Care centre had no ears and was screaming like mad all the time. Turned out she had a very small ear problem at birth that if she had been born in the UK or most places in the world a simple little jab would have cured.

But not for this little girl so as she grew the problem grew and grew to the point that she had torn off her ears as she was in so much pain, was obviously now deaf and the infection had came round to her eyes to where she was blinded.

I know that’s a bit of a random story but show’s how massive problems can come even though it was only a little thing to begin with.

And also how we take so much of what we have for granted when were whinging and crying about stupid things but that’s for another day!

Of course I’m not saying you can cure all the world’s problems by drinking more water but I bet we can cure some of them for some people and by such a simple little thing you could probably make your health so much better.

So give it a go and let me know how you get on.

Remember you will be going to the toilet a lot more so get your water in early in the day so your not up all night. Your body will get use to this extra Water intake and you will be able to consume more without rushing to the toilet.

Be sure to comment and let me know your thoughts!!

Big THANK YOU to everyone who voted for me in the Transformation contest that was on a few week’s back.

Ended up coming second and winning $2’000 that will be split between Clones Hospice Care, SOSAD suicide awareness, Free Fruit and Veg for Food Revolution Day and for some equipment in the facility.

The only way to learn anything is by DOING, although there are plenty of Cowboys out there in all walks of life who think sitting round chatting about stuff gives you all the knowledge you need.

So that’s why I love to do these as you always learn way more than any book/ course will teach you.

Thanks again and you can check it out here
