You know how I hate to brag
But I have to say
I’m kinda chuffed with how I’m keeping up with my reading goals these days!
not sure if that’s a good thing or just means I’m a boring ass old dude but either way
I’m happy out!
The book at the minute is
The Dichotomy of Leadership by Jocko Willink & Leif Babin.
They are a couple of ex US army dudes who now run a company going into businesses and talking about leadership and trying to sort them out with the major problems they have.
Of course the big issue is that leadership always starts from the top and the first person you should always look to is yourself.
Even though we all love to look elsewhere for our failures and issues but if we really want to succeed then we need to look at ourselves or if things are really bad then we need to get out of that situation/ team/ company if at all possible.
While there is a bit GI Joe/ God Bless America nonsense in it, the lessons are really good and as with all these things are actually common sense when you sit down and think them true.
This was also the first time I came across the word Dichotomy, and after looking it up online and reading the book I take it as the Contradiction between 2 ways
As in the Dichotomy of pushing too hard or not enough.
If that doesn’t make sense then Google it there!
Essentially the book talks about trying to get that balance in leadership of keeping everything right!
You want to challenge people but not too much that you wreck their head and their confidence
You want to be aggressive in a mission but you can’t go in all guns blazing without thinking it through.
You want to train hard to get better at your goal but not so hard that something bad happens and sets you back either physically or mentally.
Yet all these Motivational speakers and leadership experts will tell you it’s 100% one way or the other.
When I have had to have awkward conversations with people either in business or outside of business it’s very hard to leave the conversation happy
I usually leave thinking I was too hard on that person
or I was too easy on them and let them away with too much!
So it’s good to know I’m not the only person struggling with this balance,
or should I say
Defo have to use that word more often to sound all smart and stuff!
But I would definitely recommend the book as it shows not everything is just a matter of Black or White and do this or that
There is always that grey area where you have to try to educate yourself as best as possible and trust your gut with the decision.
A bit like all the Fitness advice out there, it’s all a load of nonsense until you can figure out what your exact goals and needs are and what suits you.
